Anyone want some cold eggs?

We have some friends staying in our basement apartment for a couple of nights as they finish up packing their house and moving to Wisconsin.

This morning Finn was in a pretty decent mood so I decided that rather than grazing on whatever could be eaten one handed from the fridge (an apple, raw tofu chunks, leftover fried rice...) I’d (gasp!) cook breakfast. I put Finn in his bouncy seat on the floor to commune with Bossa and cut up green and orange bell peppers to scramble with fresh eggs from the henhouse.* I dug up some tortillas, cheese, and tomato to complete a breakfast taco. I fried bacon. I sliced an orange. I brewed a full pot of Green Mountain coffee since I know that they're both big on caffeine. I sat a lovely table. For once I felt like I was managing to get something done other than baby wrangling. As my friends emerged from the basement, I happily chirped “I made breakfast!” as I gestured to the spread.

“Oh, there’s no need for that" they said. “We’re heading into town. Bye.” They didn't even want coffee.

Then Finn started fussing. So I ate a taco standing at the counter with him, dribbling a bit of egg in his hair.

*The chickens are currently banished to the hen house after deciding to eat all of my hostas and to lay eggs willy nilly around our eight and a half acre property, making for an egg hunt every day. We're going to clip their wings this weekend so that they can't fly the chicken yard and then let them back out.

I would have been so irritated! It would have been different if you had asked them if they wanted breakfast before you cooked and they turned it down - it's a completely different thing for them to come downstairs and you have ALREADY cooked for them and then they pass it up! They could have at least sat down and had a cup of coffee and a burrito. To me, that would have been the polite thing to do. But that's my opinion...

It sounds wonderful to me! I would have definitely sat down and they should have too. At any rate, at least you were able to start the day off with something good in your belly. It's much better than leftover fried rice!

Ya they should have sat down for a minute and enjoyed. But good job on getting such a feat done with a wee litte one.

Oooh, tasty! I would have loved one of your breakfast tacos, too. They sound scrumptious!

I'm glad you got to eat a hot yummy breakfast even if your friends missed out.

P.S. Chickens eat hostas? I had no idea. Only slugs eat mine. If we ever come to visit, Kiran would love having an egg hunt in the yard. :-)

oh, I'd be so disappointed! Not to mention a bit upset at them. Well, good thing you could eat it, like other commenters said. Reading this post made me really really hungry :)

You know, being that we're new parents, I feel overly sensitive about this for you. Because hell, I sat amongst a sea of moving boxes and damn near cried every day, thinking that we'd never get anything done again, and I'd be looking for my food processor in a box for the next ten years.

Don't people know that it's a miracle if you get anything done with an infant?

Maybe you can come over and cook for me. I have an extra arm to hold another baby.

I almost spit out my cereal laughing while reading your post. Not that it was funny for you, I think it's rude too that they didn't eat your breakfast. It's just that I could totally picture the scene and appreciate the effort it took for you to make all that with an infant on your hands. And the part about dribbling the egg on Finn's head--I'm always dribbling one food or another on my baby's head these days as I try to eat while holding her. Too funny, but I'm sorry your friends didn't appreciate your fine effort!

do your friends have any kids? bc if they did one might think they would sit and eat your lovely breakfast whether or not they wanted it- instead out of compassion and appreciation for your HUGE efforts. I am hungry just reading about it.
Take care,

Sounds a bit rude to me, too, but perhaps they had plans and a time schedule that they had to stick to?? Trying to give them the benefit of the doubt! Regardless, it was really nice of you to do that for them.
